I hear there’s talk of a sequel in the offing. Though shot a bit patchily with a few dodgy special effect sequences, QGM has delightfully kitschy colours and a dramatic pop calendar art sensibility, in perfect keeping with the psychedelic persona of Quick Gun Murugun. Turns out the corporate dudes were busy knotting their expensive ties. However, QGM music will go down in Indian music history, because Fox Star studios forgot to credit music composer Sagar Desai, or any of the other musicians on the audio CD, a fact that was belatedly discovered at the music launch. Oh Little Flower and Naam mera Mango Dolly are delightful songs, interspersed with Tamil lyrics, with a melodious rasam-jazz kind of bittersweet aftertaste. QGM has superb music, far removed from Bollywood, which fits in well with the comic book setting. Shashanka introduced the genius of Kailash allah ke bande Kher in his insane first movie, Waisa Bhi Hota Hai, and the magic continues. Luckily, the sharp dialogue, mostly subtitled, keeps the laughs coming constantly. So QGM is taken to Yamlok in a motorcycle phat phatiya, where he pleads with a cornball Chandra Gupta (Vinay Pathak) to send him back to earth. Minor problem, for in this film every thing goes. Then the other problem is that Rice Plate Reddy kills QGM within 15 minutes. Vegetarianism is the need of the hour, except that QGM has sworn off violence because of his beloved, Locket Lover (Lola Kutty), who stays trapped in a locket through the movie, watching his every move.
Arch villain Rice Plate Reddy (Nasser) is converting all Udipi restaurants into non-vegetarian bars, and only QGM can now stop him. The story, which starts somewhere in the wild south, is corny and original, to say the least.

Amazingly, Dr Rajendra Prasad plays this bizarre brief to a perfect, nuanced cadence, humourless yet full of comic action, exaggerated yet elegant, surely a master class for aspiring actors. What an astounding performance! The veteran Telugu superstar plays QGM, a shy, reserved, middle aged, cross-dressing vegetarian cowboy with kiss curls and a conscience, who spouts the Gita and also happens to be the fastest pistolleer this side of Vedaranyam.
So mind it, I yum involved party in this madrasi madness.įirstly, I doff my hat to Dr Rajendra Prasad.

The ladybug-attired gun-slinging cowboy, spouting idli-syncratic wisdom became an instant hit on TV back then, and works even 15 years later on big screen, demonstrating the power of an original, big idea. Before Ram Gopal Varma blogs about it, let me say that I, peppermint Tejpal, have known director Shashanka Ghosh and writer Rajesh Devraj for over 20 years, from our cub days as copywriters in HTA Delhi to working together in Channel, Mumbai, where the duo unleashed QGM for the first time. As the title and cast may suggest, Quick Gun Murugan is an offbeat southern curry western in spoken Tamil, Hindi and English, quite unlike anything else you may have seen.
